Recommendation for multi-user password manager

January 10th, 2007 by Leonid Mamchenkov

I need your advice, guys.  I am working with a few other people on a number of projects.  As usual, this involves a multitude of passwords - FTP servers, SSH sessions, web applications, email credentials, and so and so forth.  There is just no way to remember all of these.  And these all don’t fit into Firefox’s password manager, because of all those protocols and applications. And that’s not it.  Because we are a few people, we have to share this information.  We could work it out with just sharing it between all of us, but, ideally, we need a way to setup different access levels.

Can you recommend any good ready-made solution?  Preferably, it should be web-based, with strong encryption algorithms used internally, and with access control lists (ACLs).  Preferably, it should be free as in beer.  It must be an open-source product - otherwise, I won’t trust it with all my passwords.
So, do you have anything in mind?  Have you seen or used anything that has such functionality?  How do you solve this problem?  Or how would you solve it, if you had it?

So do you basically need a passwords storage mechanism which can store different username/passwords, which can put this username/passwords in different categories, have it’s own authentication mechanism with ACLs? Did I get you write?

Yes, indeed. I need a password database with different access levels to different users. For example, I should have a list of logins and passwords for administration of all my clients. But clients should have access only to their login information.

I use KeePass (http://keepass.info). I’m not sure about access levels though - I don’t think there are any in KeePass.

Thanks Timur, I’ll check it out :)

So how is KeePass multi-user? It locks database write doesn’t it? So only one user at a time can change it. Checked their sourceforge and multi-user is “planned”…

Our web crew is looking for this same feature set. Mulituser and web accessible is at the top of our list.

So did anyone find one - a password manager with multiuser / access levels? We have been using Keepass which has been great, but has outgrown our needs. It is only single write (1 user at a time) and doesnt ahve access levels which means that 1 password and you have access to all the passwords contained within the db.

Love to hear if there is another product out there…. cheers
